Hello,

I was glad to find out that knights was GPLed, however I wonder what the license of the visuals and audio files is. Are they original and GPLed as well or 'taken from the web' with unknown license status? :)

Thanks

duke

I think the graphics and audio files are under GPL too.

Kalle Marjola (the original knights programmer) stated in his GPL license data: "The license affects the source code, documentation, maps and graphics."

Don't know about the audio files, but the graphics are under GPL.

Stephen

dukey is correct about the graphics.

I am not entirely sure where the audio files came from, I had assumed they were GPL as well, although you might want to contact Kalle Marjola if you want to check.

I'm curious, are you intending to use them for something?

Thanks! I think I will. If I can find a way to contact Kalle.

I would like to add it to http://opengameart.org/ for example. Also I'm generally curious about how free (code only or code and data) foss games are. I write about foss games on a friend's blog and some readers care about the license status of data too. (I happen to be one of those people :D)

PS: Do you happen to know the origin of the graphics? They seem to me like vectorized pixel art.

His readme from the original Knights source code is here: http://rpr.kapsi.fi/games/misc/ks_disclaimer.txt -- at the bottom you will find an email address.

The graphics were all made by Kalle as far as I know. They are pixel art, mostly 16x16 sprites, using (if I remember correctly) a 16 colour palette. In my version of the game they are scaled up from their original size using Scale2x (http://scale2x.sourceforge.net/), or optionally just a straightforward nearest neighbour scaling (if you set this in the options).
